After the United States set up relations with the People's Republic of China, the Taiwan Relations Act was adopted by the United States Congress on April 10, 1979. In accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act, the Coordination Council for North American Affairs (CCNAA) and its U.S. counterpart, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), were simultaneously established after the termination of diplomatic relations between the two countries on January 1, 1979.

  American Institute in Taiwan (****)

is a non-profit, private corporation established shortly after the US Government changed its diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing on January 1, 1979. Any programs, transactions, or other relations conducted or carried out by the President or any Agency of the US Government with respect to Taiwan shall be conducted and carried out by or through the American Institute in Taiwan." The Department of State, through a contract with the Institute, provides a large part of AIT's funding and guidance in its operations. Congress also assumed an oversight role with respect to the Institute's operations.
