My name is John McDonnell, and for years I wrote a weekly e- newsletter that profiled business-oriented Web sites. Now I'm using my Web research skills to find sites that are useful for international trade, as well as some fun sites that you'll enjoy visiting.

RESEARCHER'S LINKS
http://www.gate.net/~barbara

In my journalism days I learned how to dig up information for stories, but it's a pity I didn't have Barbara's Graffiti News Researcher's Pages at www.gate.net/~barbara/index.html back then. This site is chock-full of links to good information in scores of categories (everything from Animals to Web Page Resources). It's worth visiting no matter what kind of research you do. Take a look at all the resources she has under the International category, and you'll see what I mean.

OUR FEATURED REGIONAL SITE -- CHINASITE.COM
http://www.chinasite.com/

If I didn't already know that great changes have been occuring in China, one look at ChinaSite.com at www.chinasite.com would clue me in. At the top of the main page of this site, not far from the picture of Chairman Mao, is the smiling face of Mickey Mouse. Mickey and Mao together is not something you would have associated with China until recent years, when the Chinese government began opening up to the West. There are many changes going on in China, as one look at this Web site will show you. The site has more than 8,500 links to China- related Web sites in dozens of categories. Each link has a short description and a rating, and tells you what language the site is in (English or Chinese). The information is very useful. Under Business & Economics, for instance, the descriptions tell you which sites are run by the Chinese government, and which are private enterprises.

There are lots more links to China at the FITA site. Go to http://fita.org/webindex/index.html, click on Regional Resources and Multi-Lateral Trading Areas in the left column or "Search by Country or Region" in the right column, and then go to Asia and select China in the pop-up window. Or simply type "China" in the search box at http://www.fita.org/.

Are your prospects part of the international trade community? If so, here's an opportunity to showcase your service or product to 50,000 subscribers of Really Useful Sites for the International Trade Professional. FITA now offers limited sponsorship opportunities to selected organizations. For information, please contact Barney Lehrer, Director of eCommerce Development at webmaster@fita.org or 1-800-969-FITA extension 4.

WORLD GESTURES
http://www.webofculture.com/worldsmart/gestures.asp

If I'm ever trying to close a deal with a Bulgarian person I'll have to remember that the body language for "yes" and "no" are different in his country than mine. To say yes in Bulgaria, people shake their head back and forth, which is the opposite of how it's done in many other countries. I learned that from the Gestures page at the Web of Culture site at www.webofculture.com/worldsmart/gestures.asp. This page has some explanations of what gestures mean in different cultures, reprinted from a book by communication expert Roger Axtell.

The FITA Buy/Sell Exchange
http://fita.worldbid.com/

FITA and Worldbid.com have launched a new International Buy/Sell exchange. The FITA Buy/Sell Exchange at fita.worldbid.com is FITA's new business-to-business marketplace that helps your company find more business by delivering tender opportunities, RFQ's and qualified offers to buy and sell. You will have access to a global network of affiliated trade sites that work together to bring together businesses across borders. Take a look!

ENCYCLOPEDIAS
http://www.virtualfreesites.com/reference.encyclopedias.html

I don't know if I'll ever need to get detailed information about the yellow-shouldered blue-fronted Amazon parrot, but if I do I'll just go to the Book of Parrots at www.papageien.org/LITERATUR/index_en.shtml, which will tell me everything I need to know. The Book of Parrots is listed at Virtual Reference: Encyclopedias at www.virtualfreesites.com/reference.encyclopedias.html, a great site for anyone seeking reference information on the Web. This page has something for everyone. You can find everything from an encyclopedia of the t.v. show Babylon 5 to the Encyclopedia of the Orient at i-cias.com/e.o/index.htm, an excellent resource for those interested in that region of the world.
